International human rights opportunities - Protection Officers (added 17-Apr-2008)

Austcare’s Rapid Response Register is a roster of professional protection practitioners available for deployment to United Nations agencies overseas for periods of 3-12 months. It aims to enhance the capacity of the UN and humanitarian agencies in times of sudden or chronic emergencies. Lawyers with qualifications and experience in refugee, human rights and/or humanitarian law can obtain further information from our website http://www.austcare.org.au/get-involved/employment.aspx.

Duties could include:
• Promoting the respect of human rights through contacts with community leaders; acting as a mediator between displaced persons and local authorities or political groups; negotiating confidence building measures between groups/persons; initiating discussions towards the reconciliation of differences between ethnic and political groups.
• Initiating measures to raise awareness of protection issues, such as the rights of minorities, children and women; working with academic institutions, law enforcement officials, immigration and border authorities for effective protection of refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons.
