Allens Arthur Robinson said its litigation and dispute resolution group was one of several practices areas that has achieved strong growth in revenue in 2005-06 compared to the last financial year. Managing partner Tom Poulton said a highlight was acting for Aristocrat Leisure in the shareholder class action proceedings commenced by Dorajay Pty Ltd in the Federal Court.
Gadens Lawyers said the firm’s litigation practice had had a very strong year overall. “Growth has been strong and there has been a good spread of work,” said Gadens’ managing partner Michael Bradley. Bradley added that while the litigation practice’s profile had been enhanced within the marketplace, there had also been a more general trend towards litigation work.
Keith Steele, practice group head for the Freehills litigation group said the past year had been an extremely busy one for the group. “We’ve been involved in a range of high profile cases including acting for the banks in Australia’s longest running commercial trial, the Bell case in Perth; acting for the plaintiff in the landmark C7 case; acting for the liquidator in the Sons of Gwalia administration; and acting for ANZ Bank and the liquidator in the case against the former Harris Scarfe auditors.”
The firm has also announced three new partners in the litigation team, including Hamish Mcpherson, Paul Wenk and Geoff Hansen.
The practice group is proud of the pro bono work it has done, said Steele. It has had some “wins in the pro bono arena”, he said, “including achieving a successful outcome for a significant pro bono case on 10 November, with the Federal Court decision marking a migration test case”. As well, the firm acted for a Perth midwife in her challenge of the Immigration Department’s ability to automatically refuse permanent residency to families with a Down syndrome member, he said.
Deacons has built up its litigation practice significantly with five partners appointed laterally as well as the promotion of partners internally. “Our litigation area also includes our workplace relations group and within that group occupational health and safety,” managing partner Don Boyd says. “Both of those areas have been burgeoning areas for lawyers and particularly for us.”
