We look for a commitment to and genuine passion for commercial law, a variety of outside pursuits and interests, an ability to team effectively with others and a client oriented/commercial approach.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
There will be approximately 45 articled clerk positions available for 2007. We have 40 articled clerks commencing in 2006 and this year we had 34 articled clerks join the firm. The numbers are increasing each year.
Arnold Bloch Leibler
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
There will be a combination of partners, solicitors, articled clerks and representatives from human resources.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
We will be handing out our Headstart brochure, which details our graduate recruitment program and application process, and case studies from our solicitors who have participated in ABL’s seasonal and articled clerk programs.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
We look for candidates with the ability to adapt and work within ABL’s culture, to learn and develop skills and practice innovative commercial law. We also seek the right attitude towards work, colleagues and an ability to contribute to the ABL environment
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
We will offer between 10 and 12 articled clerk positions in February / March 2006, for 2007 starts. We will offer approximately 36 seasonal clerkship positions for 2006. This is consistent with the number of graduate positions offered at ABL over the past two years.
Australian Government Solicitor
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
Our HR officer, Donna Galea and marketing manager Tiffany Queisser, Libby Haigh, a senior executive lawyer and the team leader for the administrative law team and two of our articled clerks, Lucy Rees and James Forsaith.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
We have an information pack which contains booklets and brochures about the firm and our articled clerk programme and the conditions of employment.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
The Melbourne office of AGS looks for four attributes in their articled clerk applicants, including relevant work experience; a high level understanding of the legal process, concepts and terminology; exceptional communication skills, both written and oral; and an understanding of AGS’s history, corporate structure, client base and culture.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
We will have four or five articled clerk positions available for 2007, and for those applications will have to be received by COB on 16 January 2006 . We ask for an application letter, a CV and academic transcripts. We conduct two rounds of interviews and three rotations of four months each.

We will have showbags for the students to take away, which include giveaways and brochures on our articled clerk programme, professional development structure and our pro bono and community service programs.

We always seeks out candidates with outstanding people skills, commerciality and a sound legal mind
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
We will have six positions available for articled clerks this year, which is similar to our numbers in previous years.
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
Blake Dawson Waldron will be represented by a mix of partners, senior associates, lawyers, articled clerks and members of our people development team. Our staff partner, Vince Rogers, and our graduate programs manager, Peter Barber, will also be attending.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
We will be providing brochures about our firm and our programs for seasonal clerks and articled clerks. Our most important sources of information will be our people who attend and answer the questions that the students will want to ask.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
We are looking for people who will thrive in our high performance culture, who share our values and who want to grow and develop professionally.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
We will recruit around 60 seasonal clerks and 20 to 25 articled clerks. This is approximately the same rate as the last two years.

A variety of staff from all our departments.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
We will pass out general information on the firm, relevant dates for clerkship applications and a package of goodies.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
Solid academic results are a must but we also look for individuals who are well-rounded as evidenced by a broad range of experiences and certain behavioural skills such as time management, initiative, goal setting, team work, an understanding of client service and motivation. However, most importantly they need to be the right cultural fit.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
In 2006 we will have up to 22 graduates starting with us. This is a slight increase on previous years.
Cornwall Stodart Lawyers
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
There will be representation from all areas of the firm – from partners, senior associates, lawyers and current articled clerks. Our CEO and the HR manager will also be present on the night.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
We will have a surprise giveaway that we hope students will find useful. All the information relating to clerkships is available on our website, www.cornwalls.com.au. There will also be current and past clerks there to answer any questions students have about clerkships at Cornwall Stodart.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
We are looking for candidates who have a sound academic record, who want to work hard and demonstrate their ability and initiative, and someone who has good interpersonal skills.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
In 2006, we will continue to have six seasonal clerkship positions available – the same number as in the past couple of years. In 2007, we will have six articled clerkships split into two intakes – February/March and then July. Having a split intake has allowed us to increase the intake without jeopardising the level of supervision, training and hands-on involvement in our articled clerks’ experience.

A show bag containing information about our practice areas, graduate development program and recruitment process, as well as other giveaways.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
We look for individuals with common sense and an instinctive business mind, who are outstanding communicators and can simply define the essence of any issue, and who are mature enough to know they don’t yet have all the answers. More importantly, we want determined people who can go the extra mile when necessary.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
We recruit between 15 and 20 graduates each year depending on the needs of our practice groups. Seventeen graduates will commence in 2006 and exact numbers for 2007 are still to be confirmed.

There will be a range of representatives from Deacons including current articled clerks, lawyers, senior associates, partners and human resources representatives so we invite you to use the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of the firm at all career stages.

Students will receive a package including Deacons ‘New Dimensions’ graduate booklet with informative CD-Rom, notepad and pen.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
Deacons’ focus is to provide commercially switched on advice to our clients. We seek individuals who are intelligent, innovative and like to work within a team to achieve results.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
We anticipate recruiting between 15 and 18 Articled Clerks for 2007, which is consistent with the previous two years. We find this number works well to ensure each articled clerk receives 12 months of quality client-related work, and links in well to the number of first year solicitors we appoint the subsequent year.

Dibbs Abbott Stillman Melbourne will be represented by two members of our legal team, both of whom completed the articled clerk program in 2004. In addition, our articled clerk partner and the human resources team will be available to answer questions about life as a lawyer at Dibbs Abbott Stillman.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
There will be lots of information available and a few surprises but they wouldn’t be a surprise if we told you.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
As a firm, we look for graduates with consistent academic results and who are well rounded, commercially astute, enthusiastic and happy to work in a team.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
The firm generally accepts four graduates. However, we assess this based on thebusiness’s human resource requirements and align the number of graduates with our strategic growth plan. In both 2004 and 2005, we had five articled clerks. Dibbs Abbott Stillman is committed to training and developing our graduates into professional lawyers. We annually assess the various options for developing graduates into knowledgeable and skilled and will determine the best option for the firm and the graduates.

A mix of junior and senior lawyers, partners and members of our national human resources team will attend to provide graduates with a feel for the diversity of people and work at Ebsworth & Ebsworth.

Our graduate pack includes our firm brochure outlining our culture, values, reputation and our focus for the future. Graduates will also take with them a flyer detailing our articles program for 2007, which includes complete information on our application process.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
We value people who show a flexibility and willingness to work in different areas of practice under different circumstances, coupled with the drive and initiative to succeed. This adaptability provides our graduates with a real understanding of our business and how we work together. We recognise the importance of a well-rounded life outside university/work. Our graduates also need to demonstrate a keen interest in the areas of law related to our areas of expertise and have a strong academic record.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
Our Melbourne office will be offering three positions for 2007, the same number of positions as offered in 2006.

Freehills doesn’t like to put people into boxes, and so there are not three specific qualities we consider imperative in our graduate recruits. Instead, we focus on attracting students who have the ability, the ambition, and the passion to excel. We look to identify these qualities by assessing things like academic results, extracurricular interests, and life experience outside study. Students should look to demonstrate how they can work effectively as a team member, and that they have a practical, problem-solving approach to their work.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
Freehills has around 25 to 30 graduate positions which we look to fill with very high calibre individuals who can demonstrate a passion for law and for working in one of Australia’s largest commercial law firms.
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
Gadens past and present articled clerks will be at the Careers Fair to answer any queries graduates have about what it is like to practise the law and what it is like to work at Gadens. The staff resources team will also be available to answer any queries about the firm and the type of articled clerks Gadens is looking for.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
The most important thing for graduates to take away with them is a feeling of what it will be like to work at Gadens. It is important for graduates to understand the culture of Gadens’ Melbourne office and what it is that we are looking for in prospective articled clerks.
Literature on Gadens’ Melbourne office will be available for graduates to take away, including information on our practice areas. This is intended to supplement the verbal information graduates receive on the day. Oh, and there will be chocolate as well.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
Personality, enthusiasm and an understanding that a Gadens lawyer is in the business of providing commercial legal solutions.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
In 2005 Gadens had 10 articled clerks. However, up to 14 articled clerks may be taken on in 2006. This can be attributed to the fact that Gadens is experiencing a period of steady growth.
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
The Hall & Wilcox stand will be attended by past and present articled clerks. The partner representative will be Mark Dunphy and the firm’s human resources representative, Katie McKenzie, will be available to answer queries from prospective articled clerks.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
Hall & Wilcox will be providing information about the firm, our articles program and details of how to apply.
We have packaged this information into a convenient, innovative and user-friendly CD-Rom format with a virtual tour and interviews with staff and partners.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
Hall & Wilcox is looking for candidates with solid academic results but who also take part in extra-curricular activities or part-time employment.
Articled clerks must be considered to be a good cultural fit with the firm.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
The firm will be looking to employ five or six articled clerks to commence in March 2007.
This is a slight increase from the previous two years, with the increase due to the significant growth currently being experienced by the firm.

We seek out a cultural fit, a demonstrated interest in social justice or community issues, a sound academic record and general interests that indicate a well rounded individual

We take an average of four articled clerks each year.

Students visiting the Lander & Rogers stand will have the opportunity to meet a range of people from across the firm including partners, lawyers, articled clerks and our human resources team.

We’re distributing our latest graduate careers brochure which sets out everything students need to know about applying to Lander & Rogers, together with a document wallet and mini Lander & Rogers radios.

We invest a great amount of time and energy in finding the right people to join our team. We’re looking for smart, energetic people who are keen to learn and who aspire to achieve.
Our clients come from a broad range of industries, so it’s important that our people are flexible, approachable, able to relate and communicate with confidence.

We have seven positions available for articles commencing in 2007 and 21 positions for seasonal clerkships in 2006/2007.

We are looking for 12 to 14 graduates for 2007. We took ten in 2005 and will take 12 for 2006.

Mallesons Stephen Jaques
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
The graduate recruitment manager will attend along with her team. As well, current articled clerks and members of the graduate recruitment committee comprising partners, senior associates and solicitors will be there.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
Students will receive a firm brochure plus a small gift. This will complement the firm’s face-to-face approach.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
Mallesons looks for people with strong communication skills, team players and those who strive for excellence across all their academic and personal interests.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
Mallesons will be looking to recruit 30-40 articled clerks in the Melbourne centre as per the previous two years.
Maurice Blackburn Cashman
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
There will be a mixture of partners, solicitors and graduates from a variety of practice teams as well as our human resources team.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
We feel that the money we normally spend on promotional items could be used to greater effect by one of the many charities making a difference in our community.
This year when visiting our table at the fair, students will be provided with the firm brochure and be given the option of nominating a charity of their choice (from a list of three) to whom we will make a donation on their behalf.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
We are looking for people who demonstrate: A genuine interest in plaintiff law as practised by the firm and knowledge of the history and philosophy of MBC; sound academic achievements in law; an ability to interact effectively with people at all levels.

We will be offering between six and eight positions which is consistent with the past few years.
Middletons
1. Who from your firm will be attending?
Our people from a broad range of practice areas will be on hand to talk graduates.
2. What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?
Each year we provide students with an information pack. This year the information pack will contain information about the firm, our National Graduate Training Program and various other Middletons products. Most importantly, young lawyers will be on hand to share their experiences.
3. What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?
We look to recruit well-rounded, multi-skillled individuals who don’t just fit the mould. We seek graduates who aspire to be exceptional.
4. How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?
In 2006, the firm will offer 16 articled clerk positions, an increase from the 15 articled clerk positions we offered in Melbourne in 2005.

There will be approximately 15 Minter Ellison representatives at the fair throughout the afternoon. The representatives will include legal staff from different practice groups and varying levels (articled clerks, lawyers, senior associates, special counsel, partners) and human resources staff.
