Teams of partners, summer clerks and human resources managers will storm Sydneys Darling Harbour on 23 March in order to put their best on display. Here, they hope to draw in the finest legal talent from the hordes of job seekers also attending the Fair. Firms tell us what they have on offer

Addisons Lawyers

Who from your firm will be attending?

Addisons’ partners, lawyers and paralegals (including recent summer clerks) will all be in attendance at various stages throughout the day.

Will they be making any presentations or giving talks?

No formal presentations are scheduled, but everyone who attends on behalf of Addisons will be happy to answer any of your questions and otherwise just have a chat about life in a law firm.

What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?

Addisons is being kind to the environment and not loading you up with plastic bags of items - but a unique Addisons’ gift will be on offer. Importantly, material that is relevant to you will be available – including information on Addisons and its summer clerk program – which is a tailored program designed to benefit you and the firm.

What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?

The qualities and attributes of each particular Addisons’ graduate may vary greatly – and each may be important. Overall, Addisons’ graduates will be people who are compatible with the approach of the firm.

How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?

Graduates will be recruited through the Addisons’ Summer Clerk program. Last year Addisons engaged three summer clerks, two of which have continued on with the firm. This year the firm intends to offer four summer clerk positions, with a view to offering, where appropriate, graduate employment and paralegal positions.

Allens Arthur Robinson

We will have a range of partners, senior associates, lawyers, graduates and members from our people and performance department representing the firm at the Careers Fair this year.

Will they be making any presentations or giving talks?

We will not be making any formal presentations, however, all representatives will be available to answer any questions. We will also be hosting a round table discussion on sport and the law. The discussion is a Q&A style forum that aims

to provide students with the opportunity to meet some of our lawyers and learn about this interesting area of law.

What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?

We will provide students with a DVD which contains some information about the firm and interviews with several AAR lawyers. The DVD provides an insight into the type of people with whom students may expect to work and some of the experiences to expect at AAR. We will also provide students with a range of brochures with more information about our graduate and summer clerkship programs and information about the firm’s different departments and practice groups, including the firm’s Asian practice.

What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?

Imagination, interests, and intelligence. We offer lawyers a stimulating work environment based on intellectual excellence and individual interests. Not only do we look for intelligent people who are committed to becoming excellent lawyers, but we also seek well-rounded individuals who have interests outside of the law.

How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?

AAR recruits approximately 40 summer clerks per year in Sydney and our graduate positions are usually filled by previous summer clerks, however, from time to time, we have the capacity to take on additional graduates. This year, AAR will be recruiting for graduates to commence in Sydney in July 2007. Graduate applications open on 12 March and close on 13 April 2007. You will need to apply for a July 2007 graduate position through our online application system on our website at http://www.aar.com.au/careers/join/grad/syd.htm.

What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?

Ability, ambition and enthusiasm are key qualities students need in order to have a great career experience at Freehills. We are also particularly interested in students’ demonstrated ability to successfully combine their studies with other competing priorities, challenges and achievements such as work experience, sporting endeavours, music or other passions. It goes without saying that graduates also need to demonstrate that they can work effectively in a team and apply a practical, problem-solving approach to their work.

A representative selection of some of our finest and most earnest young solicitors may attend, subject to their daily billing targets. If the stall is unattended, it’s because we’re all doing something more important.

Will they be making any presentations or giving talks?

A law degree; willingness to work till it hurts, then keep working; and the personality and personal values of a federal cabinet minister.

How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?

We prefer to hire in bulk to account for natural attrition and burnout. This year we are taking 150 graduates in the hope of there being six or seven of them left standing by February 2008. This is more than previously because we’ve been losing them faster than anticipated. Young people today just seem to be soft.

Hunt & Hunt

Who from your firm will be attending?

A mix of legal practitioners and management. Yes, this is a marketing exercise but we’re in the business of law, not the business of smoke and mirrors. On the surface there is little to distinguish one law firm from another. Graduates need to closely scrutinise the firms as subtle differences could impact them as prospective employees. We want to introduce the graduates to a representative cross-section of our firm – partners and staff; young and old; long term and new recruits, and so on – to assist them in making this important decision.

What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?

Passion. And a sense of our firm’s culture, values and differentiators.

What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?

To quote one of our corporate partners, Catherine Logan: “As a commercial lawyer, I’m often advising on the impact of new technologies, and have grown to rely on them myself to deliver the speed and standard of service my clients expect. People who have grown up in the information age, who thrive on change and development, and are passionate about all things will always be valued members of my team”.

Johnson Winter & Slattery

Who from your firm will be attending?

A selection of practitioners, the professional development manager, and the communications manager.

What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?

Information about the firm, information about our graduate program, information about the Johnson Winter & Slattery Careers Fair Competition where NSW law students can win a 80GB iPod and an iPod Hi-Fi.

What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?

Outstanding academic achievement; demonstrated interest in commercial law; and excellent communication skills.

How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?

We will be restricting our graduate intake to two so that we are able to maintain our ratio of one to one senior to junior lawyers. By restricting the number of graduates in this way, our junior lawyers have an opportunity to work closely with senior practitioners in a team environment and experience a number of different practice areas rather than being pigeonholed early in their career.

KPMG

Who from your firm will be attending?

KPMG will have a number of representatives in attendance including staff from the graduate recruitment team and staff members from our tax division who have been through the graduate recruitment process in the last few years.

Will they be making any presentations or giving talks?

What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?

KPMG will provide a fan flyer with information about KPMG which includes information on the range of work that we do for our clients, the benefits available to employees of KPMG, what we look for in graduates who will join our firm and information about KPMG’s involvement in the communities. More comprehensive information can be found on our website: kpmg.com.au.

What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?

It is impossible to pick only three qualities that we look for in graduate employees. We are looking for team players who relish the challenge of solving problems and who can communicate their ideas with passion. We look for graduates who want to keep on learning, who want to be leaders in their profession and who have integrity and independence of mind.

How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?

KPMG will again be recruiting 35 graduates this April to start in our 2008 intake. We have already recruited a number of graduates via our summer vacation program so we expect to have more than 50 new graduates start with our tax group in Sydney next year. This is consistent with the numbers we have recruited in the past two years.

Macquarie Bank

Who from your organisation will be attending?

We will have various representatives from the bank including senior bankers, recent graduates and HR reps.

Will they be making any presentations or giving talks?

What items/information will you have for graduates to take away?

We will have posters and perhaps some surprise goodies available.

What are the three most important qualities you are looking for in a graduate employee?

Our graduates must be entrepreneurial; motivated and driven; and have a genuine interest in finance.

How many positions will you have available for graduates this year?

We will have between 30 and 40 positions available.

Maddocks

Who from your firm will be attending?

Maddocks will be represented by partners, lawyers, graduates and HR staff.
