SPECIAL EDITION: On October 19, Lawyers Weekly hosted the inaugural Women In Law Awards in Melbourne. The night was MC’d by Kate Ashmor, president of Australian Women Lawyers, with a keynote address from Caroline Counsel, the immediate past president of the Law Institute of Victoria. Although the two women disagreed on diversity quotas, they were both emphatic that the battle for gender equality in the legal profession is far from over. The awards recognised women in law who are lighting the way. Winners included Fiona McLeod SC, Corrs Chambers Westgarth’s Christine Covington, Rebecca Heath from Squire Sanders, Felicity Heffernan from the Western Australia Department of Planning, Melbourne IT’s general counsel, a partner at Norton Rose and Gillian Triggs, head of the Australian Human Rights Commission. Watch the video to hear their views on women in the profession.
