Legal publications were set to celebrate the first week of the year in which no law firm publicly made staff layoffs.

LEGAL publications were set to celebrate the first week of the year in which no law firm publicly made staff layoffs. 

 

But champagne corks were stopped as Weil Gotshal laid off 79 staff. 

 

Redundancies have been rife writes legal blog Law Shucks. The rate continues to drop, however, even though unemployment numbers continue to rise. 

 

Last week marked the lowest record of redundancies in US law firms for the year. 

 

The week before reached just 148 layoffs, which was the same number as the first week of the year. 

 

The week ending April 17 was the next lowest, during which 121 people were laid off in major law firms.
