Martyn Hagan, the executive director of the Law Society of Tasmania, has been appointed as acting secretary-general of the Law Council of Australia (LCA).

The appointment took effect on 8 January and follows the resignation of Professor Sally Walker from the position of secretary-general.

Professor Walker announced her resignation in December after the LCA directors voted to establish a working party to review the structure of the Law Council. As the review will include consideration of the role of the secretary-general, and as she was to be an active member of the working party, Walker resigned to ensure there would be no conflict of interest.

However, in a statement welcoming Hagan’s appointment, LCA president Joseph Catanzariti revealed that Hagan, as acting secretary-general, will replace Walker on the working party.

Although there have been several consultants’ reports, the structure of the LCA has not been fully reviewed since its establishment more than 79 years ago.

Catanzariti added: “We are delighted Mr Hagan has accepted the acting secretary-general position and wish to thank the Law Society of Tasmania for making him available to the Law Council.

“The Executive and I are confident Mr Hagan will provide the requisite degree of stability and leadership to the staff of the Law Council during this transitional period.”

Catanzariti added that no timeframe had been set for the appointment of a new secretary-general and said the LCA was “committed to ensuring the identification of the secretary-general is undertaken with due care and with an appropriate level of consultation”.

Catanzariti thanked Walker for the contribution she made to the LCA over the past six months, since her appointment in June 2012.

This year is the 80th anniversary of the LCA and Catanzariti is its 61st president.
