BBC broadcasts new legal role

The head of legal at BBC Worldwide (ANZ) has been promoted to the newly-created role of chief commercial officer.

Fiona Lang (pictured) will oversee corporate advisory and strategic planning; business operations, and legal and business affairs, including rights management, at the subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation.

In her role as head of legal, Lang was responsible for negotiating the broadcaster’s new drama and comedy channel, BBC First, which will launch on Foxtel in August. She also spearheaded a business partnering model where legal teams work as partners on key commercial matters, which has been replicated globally.

“Fiona has been instrumental in leading several key deals for BBC Worldwide this year and her role reflects the need for enhanced strategic business planning across the business,” said managing director Jon Penn.

Lang joined BBC Worldwide in 2011 from Gilbert + Tobin, where she specialised in M&A in the media and communications sector. Her clients included News Corp, Yahoo!, Seven Network and Pacific Magazines.
