A partner at a global firm will join the federal government’s Board of Taxation.

Minter Ellison partner Karen Payne (pictured) has been appointed to the board, a non-statutory body that provides a business and community perspective on taxation laws.

Ms Payne has previously acted as an expert panel member on several reviews by the board and is a member of the tax committees of the Law Council of Australia and Property Council of Australia.

Minter Ellison's head of tax, Bill Thompson, suggested Ms Payne would make an outstanding contribution to the board.

"This appointment acknowledges Karen's long experience as a specialist tax adviser and tax lawyer," he said.

Her tenure will be for a period of three years, and coincides with the appointment of Cochlear Ltd CFO Neville Mitchell and Rio Tinto head of tax Asia Pacific, Ann-Maree Wolff.

In addition, assistant treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced existing board member and Herbert Smith Freehills consultant John Emerson had been made Deputy Chair.

Mr Emerson has more than 40 years’ experience in tax law and has sat on the board since 2007.
