New migration security reviewer appointed

The Law Council of Australia has welcomed ASIO’s appointment of a new Independent Reviewer of Adverse Security Assessments.

Mr Robert Cornall AO has been appointed the role, following his predecessor Margaret Stone’s appointment as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security in August.

Law Council of Australia president Duncan McConnel said reviewing adverse security assessments was critical to maintaining fairness in the legal system.

“ASIO’s security assessment function is a core part of Australia’s national security defences, but to ensure this function accords with fundamental rule of law principles, such as the right to procedural fairness, a strong reviewer is critical,” Mr McConnel said.

“The Law Council of Australia is confident that Mr Cornall’s legal experience and background will enable him to execute his new responsibilities with distinction.”
