FREEHILLS HAS recently made two new senior appointments, with John Ware becoming a partner in the firm and John McKenna taking up the newly created position of chief risk officer and general counsel for the firm.
After seven years at Clayton Utz, Ware has joined as a partner in Freehills’ Brisbane banking and projects group.
The firm said Ware is an experienced planning and environment lawyer, having practised in the field for over 15 years. He advises clients in relation to land use approvals and impact statements required for major projects and specialises in town planning, environmental law, heritage law and compulsory land acquisition. He has acted for clients from both the public and private sectors coming from a wide range of industries, including retail, property development, manufacturing, resources, electricity, water and gas.
McKenna has recently become the firm’s chief risk officer and general counsel. Freehills chief executive officer, Gavin Bell, explained that this new role will involve overseeing the firm’s approach to risk management across the entire firm.
“[McKenna’s] position is a new one for the firm; it is consistent with trends we are seeing amongst our clients across a range of industries where risk is being addressed and managed more centrally on a whole of enterprise basis,” he said.
McKenna, who is based in the firm’s Melbourne office, is an experienced banking and finance lawyer with particular expertise in project finance, acquisition finance, structured finance and large-scale corporate lending.
