Lawyers swap litigation for riding laps

Lawyers will leave the office and hit the racetrack in a charity bike riding event for cancer this week.

Ten law firms have entered teams in ANZUP’s Below the Belt Pedalthon in Sydney, with lawyers making up almost one third of all entrants.

Lawyers from Clayton Utz, K&L Gates, Kemp Strang, King & Wood Mallesons, Norton Rose Fulbright, Gilbert + Tobin, Allens, Sparke Helmore, Thomson Geer and Baker & McKenzie are all mounting their bikes for the second-ever pedalthon event at the Eastern Creek raceway.

Teams of six have three hours to lap the raceway as many times as possible to raise money for ANZUP to run trials and conduct research into four 'below the belt' types of cancer: testicular, bladder, kidney and prostate.

Clayton Utz partner Sonia Goumenis, who is participating in the pedalthon for the second time, said: “From Clayton Utz's perspective, we're very committed to pro-bono and community involvement is something that we're [also] very committed to.”

She added: “[The pedalthon] allows more than just our legal staff to get involved – we've got a number of team members from HR and IT getting involved as well, so it just allows a broader team to actually be involved and engage with the community.”

Another Clayton Utz participant, Emma Covacevich, who is travelling down from Brisbane for the event, said: “It is an incredible cause and I think these sorts of cancers do affect all of us because we all have fathers, brothers, husbands or sons.”

Ms Covacevich was the number one individual on the leaderboard late last week, having raised $3,669 of her $5,000 goal, and the Clayton Utz women’s team was the number one team at that time, having raised nearly $11,500.
