Over the past year WLS experienced a 40 per cent increase in demand, meaning it was only able to assist one in 10 women who attempted to access its services, according to a statement from WLS.
The event, which is backed by the Women Lawyer’s Association of Queensland, will raise funds to assist WLS in providing legal help to more of those in need.
WLS fundraising manager Natalie Davidson believes greater community awareness of domestic violence over the past year has triggered the surge in demand.
“With increased reporting of domestic violence incidents in the media and after watching Hitting Home many people are saying they want to help but are feeling helpless in the face of the DV crisis,” Ms Davidson said.
“This time of year we’re all busy and money can be tight, but donating clothing and accessories to our event is a practical way to make a difference."
