Five things Gen Y can learn from the recession

Entering an office does not automatically entitle you to an iPhone, or even a blackberry. These days, count yourself lucky just to be given a desk. Work hard and you'll get a landline.

Taxis are not the transport of the common worker. Trains, trams, buses and ferries are quite convenient. If lost, ask other commuters for directions - they've been doing it for years.

Friday night drinks are not free. You will be expected to earn them - possibly by doing pro bono work for the bars visited and/or doing the dirty dishes after everybody else leaves.

It's OK to move back in with your parents. Actually it's not, but it beats living in a dumpster and you'll find your other lawyer friends are doing it anyway, so who's to judge?

Flipping burgers can be a profession, at least an interim one while you wait out the recession, after which you can return to work as a lawyer, and find yourself returning many midnights for a healthy late-night snack.
