Northern Territory police have followed a 'Hansel and Gretel' trail to trace an intoxicated driver who attempted a not-so-slippery getaway over the weekend.

After receiving reports of a traffic incident where a driver had collided with a road sign, Darwin police hotfooted it to the scene of the accident, only to find the driver had driven away, reported ABC Online.

However, a trail of leaking oil from the suspect's damaged car soon led police to the 26-year-old perpetrator's vehicle, which was parked at a nearby casino.

"...they did a bit of a 'Hansel and Gretel' and followed it all the way down to the casino car park, where we located the driver," Duty Superintendent Rob Farmer told the ABC.

The driver later returned a mid-range blood alcohol reading.

Folklaw imagines the driver will be finding more than a mere gingerbread courthouse and a fairytale ending at the end of his hangover.
