An avid New Zealand sci-fi fan has been left in a spin after thieves ran off with his newly-purchased Star Wars stormtrooper outfit - before was even able to wear the costume.

After purchasing the rare black $NZ 5,000 (AU $3,950) imperial stormtrooper suit online, the costume was delivered by Fed-Ex to the man's home in Wellington, but before he could collect it from his back porch, thieves had swooped and run off with the precious package.

Investigating the crime, the chief of the Wellington burglary squad, Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton, told The Dominion Post that it was a "most unusual" crime, and said the suit's owner was "quite distraught" over the theft.

"It's not a laptop or an iPod. Obviously for the person who stole it there's a novelty value. You'd want to dress up and impress your friends," Thornton told the paper.

Folklaw imagines that with such advanced psychological profiling and a comprehensive suspect description ("shiny black armoured suit, menacing demeanour, staid gait, armed with laser blaster"), the perpetrator of the crime should be fairly conspicuous in downtown Wellington.

Folklaw can only offer the following condolences to the victim, and hopes he is soon reunited with his prize outfit: "The [NZ Police] force is strong with you. "
