Two unfortunate Herbert Smith trainees have been left high and dry after failing an exam in their legal practice course (LPC) by a whopping one mark, reports rollonfriday.

In an apparently a-sympathetic gesture, the trainees were shown the door after management learned of the 49 per cent earned in their LPC litigation exam.

Lawyers Weekly can't help but speculate that Herbert Smith pounced on the opportunity to cull its stock of trainee lawyers, of which it has too many to place, and saw it as a cheaper alternative to previously adopted tactics: offering trainees £10,000 ($17,170) to defer taking up their contracts.
