A larrikin lawyer and his banker mate are set for the epic adventure of a lifetime, driving the length of Africa, through some of the remotest places in the world, all in the name of charity.

On 23 May this year, DibbsBarker lawyer Steve Cartwright and banker Mark Roberts - otherwise known as the Finding Emo Team - will take their trusty 1994 Toyota Landcruiser on an 18,000 kilometre journey from Cape Town to Cairo in order to support the Room to Read charity.

The charity partners with local communities to establish libraries and schools, create and publish local children's literature, and support education.

"Room to Read has all the characteristics of the kind of charity we want to support," said Cartwright.

"It attacks problems at a grass roots level - through children's education - not handouts. It invests locally by employing local staff, publishes local books by local authors in local languages, and it keeps its planted projects accountable in the long term."

According to the adventurous pair, Room to Read has thus far established more than 9,000 libraries, published in excess of 400 locally-authored children's books, and reached an estimated 4.1 million children worldwide.

The adventure will probably take the team across more than 15 countries - including Mozambique, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan - though their simple plan to "start in Cape Town and drive north" leaves room to move and take advantage of - or flee from - whatever exciting distractions might arise.
