In what is cited as being necessary for purely practical reasons, female lawyers in Belgium are being ordered to remove their bras when visiting clients in prison - because they set off the metal detectors.

The Herald Sun reports that strict search rules at Belgium's Hasselt prisondeem that nobody is allowed through security if the alarm goes off.

Unfortunately for legal folk of female persuasion, underwires and clasps are one of the main culprits when it comes to triggering the alarm.

Barrister Joseph Rowies said: "The alarm goes off rather easily and prison staff apply the rules to the letter, so there is sometimes no alternative for women but to enter the prison without (ahem) support."

The Directorate General of Corrections said the scanners have been tested and no faults were found.

He said: "Those who set off the device cannot enter. Those are the rules."

It's a man's world.
