The Attorney-General of Victoria is seeking expressions of interest from persons who wish to be appointed as a Deputy President of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).
Over the next 18 to 24 months, a number of vacancies might arise at the level of Deputy President and expressions of interest are sought specifically for this level of appointment.
Expressions of interest are sought from those demonstrating impeccable integrity, sound judgment, highly-developed legal skills, interpersonal skills, the ability to conduct hearings, and a capacity to make fair decisions quickly. Excellent communication skills are essential and skills in mediation are also valuable.
Expressions of interest are sought from across the private, government and community sectors. Deputy Presidents play a critical senior leadership role at VCAT, by supporting the President in the administration of the Tribunal, mentoring other members, and helping to articulate the vision for the Tribunal. They are also expected to have an established reputation for legal excellence in one or more relevant areas of law.
Persons eligible for appointment as a Deputy President must have been an Australian lawyer for not less than five years.
VCAT members possess personal qualities such as integrity, fairness, maturity, sound temperament and commitment to public service. Appointees also need to be aware of, and sensitive to, the diversity of backgrounds and life experiences of VCAT users, and the need to communicate effectively and courteously with all users. A commitment to the use of technology and participation in ongoing professional education will also be viewed favourably.
