About the role
Reporting to the General Counsel, the role provides leadership to Wesley Mission’s internal legal team and the Wesley Community Legal Service (WCLS) team.
WCLS is a unique independent specialist legal service supporting people experiencing problem gambling and their families. WCLS operates state-wide, with a wide network of referral services. The service provides legal advice and representation to clients affected by problem gambling, including advice in relation to criminal law matters, asset protection, bankruptcy, family law, and credit and debt issues. It also provides legal training for gambling and financial counsellors across NSW.
The Wesley Legal team is an internal legal function of the organisation, responsible for providing legal assistance to internal stakeholders and managing legal risk. Key responsibilities of the Executive Manager-Legal role include:
providing effective leadership and management of Wesley Mission’s legal functions (both Wesley Legal and WCLS)
supporting the broader General Counsel role in providing organisational legal, governance, risk and compliance oversight
Tertiary qualification in law
Unrestricted Practising Certificate for legal practice in NSW, or eligibility to hold one
Demonstrated senior management experience in the legal sector, or of complex teams and functions Significant post-admission legal experience (minimum 10 plus years PQE)
Relevant experience working in an in-house legal function
Broad commercial law background with significant experience in developing, reviewing and negotiating contracts
Be a practicing Christian
not for profit or cause related legal or business experience
an appreciation of the challenges involved in managing a diverse workforce within a not for profit environment
capacity to manage risk, including experience in legal practice management, staffing and Work Health and Safety
Previous experience in tendering and project management
Previous company secretarial and/or governance experience
Previous claims and litigation experience
