Legal Officer

If you enjoy a challenge and want to work in a team in a fast-paced exciting legal environment dealing with high profile work, this role is for you.

• Interesting and varied legal work
• An opportunity to work in a fast-paced, exciting legal environment
• Opportunity to work on high profile complex legal projects

We have a number of ongoing and non-ongoing opportunities across the practice for Legal Officers. You will play a critical role within a qualified team working collaboratively with your peers on exciting high-profile projects. You will report to a Senior Legal Officer Lawyer within a high tempo team.

You will need to contribute to written advice including on complex matters to clients so your ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing is essential. You should be able to be flexible in how you deliver advice and engage with clients. You are in a position of trust within the department and will work under guidance from your supervisor and manager to achieve your objectives. We are committed to developing and building quality lawyers with recognised and respected experience and qualifications. You should be willing to grow within the role and where you have the drive and ability to succeed, we will help pave your way.

Skills, capabilities, knowledge and experience

Communication is a critical skill so you will have every opportunity to use your ability to persuade and influence where possible and appropriate. This may be through internal consultation on a case or via negotiations with external stakeholders. You should be able to demonstrate an ability to deal with sensitive matters that will often impact the management of environmental issues, the agricultural industry and/or the broader Public Service as a whole. Timeframes are tight, especially when dealing with issues direct from the Ministers Offices’ or before scrutiny bodies, so must be actioned in a timely and effective manner.

Ideally you will have between 1 to 3 years of relevant post-admission experience. While this is desirable, if you have not had this level of experience but believe you would be competitive, we invite you to apply.

Flexible employment arrangements are available with the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment
