New Forests is offering a great opportunity for a qualified candidate to undertake the role of Manager, Legal, supporting the Operations team.  The New Forests forestry operations team is fundamental to the success of our business. This role is focussed on the provision of legal advice: on all property management and operational matters and to support property transactions (acquisition & disposition) across New Forests in both Australia and New Zealand; in preparing, negotiating and completing all associated commercial agreements and documents; for any other issues related to timberland investment.

The position will be reporting to our General Counsel and will be based in Sydney.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provision of legal advice to assist in the implementation of the operational management of all assets across Australia and New Zealand. Specifically: managing and monitoring the property portfolio and any leasehold interests or rights; managing any associated property rights e.g. water or carbon entitlements; advising on and documenting all harvest and haulage transactions; advising on and documenting all domestic timber sale agreements; advising on and documenting all export sale agreements, including shipping and related contracts;

  • Assisting in the procurement and management of external property managers; assisting in valuation, insurance and other service provider procurement and management;

  • Provision of related advice, such as business structures, including joint ventures, development structuring and finance, and, competition law;

  • Monitoring compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and monitoring compliance of all external service providers;

  • Management of outsourced legal advice (including instructing external counsel);

  • Monitoring legal and regulatory changes in the environment in which New Forests operates, and, making recommendations on appropriate strategies to manage those changes.

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications/experience:

  • Relevant degree/qualifications (admitted as a solicitor in one or more states in Australia or equivalent qualifications overseas and working towards being admitted in Australia);

  • Solid experience as a property lawyer, with rural property or agribusiness experience preferred, across various legal jurisdictions within Australia or New Zealand;

  • Understanding of and/or exposure to: corporate law, water law, funds management, commodities, forestry, carbon markets, anti-competitive behaviour and insurance;

  • Strong drafting skills;

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel;

  • Excellent organisational skills related to time management, multi -tasking, delegation and prioritising;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate with people in a variety of positions (internally & externally), along with strong negotiating skills;

  • Must be a team player, who works well under pressure and deadlines;

  • An ability to work independently and take ownership of role, whilst supporting the wider team.
