THE New South Wales government says it’s in dire need of legal aid funding, and that the service in the state is in crisis.

Attorney General John Hatzisergos says legal aid is having to turn increasing numbers of people away after the Federal Government has slashed funding by about $80 million in the past ten years.

Hatzistergos will raise the issue at today’s national meeting of Attorneys General in Sydney.

“What we need to do is persuade the Commonwealth Government more broadly that this is an issue which has to have their undivided attention,” he said.

“It’s not an issue which can go on any longer with temporary patch up jobs, one off funding here and one off funding there,” Hatzisergos said, the ABC reports.
