TOP law officers from around the world will descend upon Australia for the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting in 2011.

Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, today announced that Australia had formally accepted an invitation to host the event, which will be attended by more than 50 nation states, for the first time.

The Meeting, held every three years, will focus on strengthening democratic institutions underpinned by the rule of law.

The Attorney said he expects issues including counter terrorism, crime prevention, human rights, access to justice and intellectual property to be put on the table.

“The forum will provide an important opportunity for Australia to continue its regional and international advocacy on important law and justice issues,” McClelland said.

The Standing Committee of Attorneys General (SCAG) will be invited to provide input on issues to be considered at the 2011 event.
