THE LAW COUNCIL of Australia is seeking amendments to the professional standards acts to allow for mutual recognition of professional standards schemes.

At present, even though a lawyer may be covered by a professional standards scheme in one state or territory, they won’t be covered if they work in another jurisdiction.

The Professional Standards Council supports an amendment to the professional standards legislation in all jurisdictions to allow for mutual recognition of schemes in all jurisdictions.

The NSW Attorney-General has also written to his counterparts requesting that the national Professional Standards Legislation Working Group (SCAG), the group of SCAG officers implementing professional standards legislation nationally, prepare papers on the matter for SCAG’s consideration.
