THE EXECUTIVE director of the Federation of Community Legal Centres (FCLC), Hugh de Kretser, has been appointed to the Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC).

De Kretser replaces Justice David Harper, and will join fellow commissioners Professor Sam Ricketson, Judge Felicity Hampel, Paris Aristotle and chairman Neil Rees.

In his role at the FCLC — the peak body for Victoria’s 54 community legal centres — de Kretser will be responsible for the management of the sector’s reform activities and policy work. In announcing the appointment, Victorian Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls said that de Kretser would bring to the VLRC “an impressive background in law reform, community consultation and community education”.

“It is important to appoint commissioners with a wide range of experience and expertise within the justice system who have the ability to translate community expectations and needs into fair and equitable law reform,” Hulls said
