Election 2010: The Government has announced plans to establish an expert panel to help progress towards the recognition of Indigenous Australians in the Constitution, if re-elected.

The panel, to be comprised by Indigenous leaders, Members of Parliament, constitutional law experts and members of the broader Australian community, would provide options on the form of the amendment to the constitution and guidance on the information needed for public discussion following broad consultation.

The Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition would jointly determine the terms of reference and membership panel.

The Government said it is important that a bipartisan commitment is made towards the constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians, an outcome supported by former Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and John Howard.
