Federal Budget 2011: NBN key to regional justice

Federal Budget 2011: NBN key to regional justice

Legal aid and community legal centres will be asked to develop online initiatives to improve access to justice for regional areas under measures announced in the 2011-12 Federal Budget.

Legal aid and community legal centres will be asked to develop online initiatives to improve access to justice for regional areas under measures announced in the 2011-12 Federal Budget.

The Gillard Government today (10 May) announced an injection of $4 million over four years under the Strategic Framework for Access to Justice.

Under the framework, regional legal services will use the funding to create online initiatives which will be facilitated by the National Broadband Network (NBN).

According to the Government, the NBN will allow regional inhabitants to have greater access to legal information and advice which, in turn, will lead to less litigation.

The Law Council of Australia was unable to comment following the announcement, but will issue a statement in the morning (11 May).
