The new Chambers will accommodate 21 barristers who had been tenants in Equity Chambers, outside the BCL accommodation system. These chambers will cease to be available to barristers as a result of new plans by the landlord for the commercially owned building.

Gorman Chambers are named after Sir Eugene Gorman, a leading member of the Victorian Bar in the pre-war era and the founder of Equity Chambers.

Victorian Bar chairman, Michael Colbran QC also foreshadowed new BCL chambers to be opened at 140 William Street in April next year.

“The new chambers will meet the market and provide a variety of options for all barristers. The Victorian Bar will continue to work to ensure there are low barriers to entry for all who decide to join the profession, as well as premium accommodation for those who want it,” Colbran said.

“Through BCL, we are able to offer security of tenure as well as very flexible tenancy arrangements,” he said.

According to BCL chairman, Mark Derham QC: “The 140 William Street Chambers will house a further 21 barristers in premium accommodation. We have just signed a Heads of Agreement with the plan to open on level 38 in the New Year to meet demand for premium accommodation.”
