Family law expert appointed as judge of FCFCOA

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has welcomed the appointment of an accredited family law specialist as a new judge to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA).

Michael Berry SC has been appointed as a judge in division 1 of the FCFCOA, as a result of having been appointed as a judge of the Family Court of Western Australia on 7 June 2022.

This appointment comes in the context of a year of increases in the volume and complexities of cases before the courts, including across the Family Court nationwide.

Mr Berry SC has enjoyed a successful career in the law, the A-G noted in a statement, having practised predominantly family law. He was admitted as a legal practitioner in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 1996, and then called to the bar in 2005 before being appointed senior counsel in 2014.

Mr Berry SC also taught family law at the University of Western Australia for several years and was president of the Family Practitioners Association for two years.

Mr Dreyfus said: “On behalf of the Australian government, I congratulate Mr Berry on his appointment and thank him for his willingness to serve the people of Australia as a judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (division 1) and the FCWA.
