Linda Black has been appointed as the newest judge of the District Court in Western Australia, following a career of more than 25 years as a criminal lawyer.

Ms Black was a state prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for almost a decade before returning to private practice specialising in criminal, disciplinary, regulatory and human rights law. She has worked as a lawyer for more than two decades, with most of that time in the criminal courts defending and prosecuting some of Western Australia’s highest profile and complex matters.

Attorney-General John Quigley congratulated Ms Black on the newly created position.

“I would like to congratulate Ms Black on her well-deserved appointment to the District Court. Ms Black is highly regarded and one of Western Australia’s leading barristers having spent equal time as a prosecutor and as defence counsel,” he said.

“She has personally appeared in all relevant courts including the Supreme Court, both in the Court of Appeals and before a single judge in high profile criminal matters.”

Ms Black is also an accredited advocacy teacher, one of two founding directors of Murray Chambers Perth and a former president of the Criminal Lawyers Association of Western Australia.

“Ms Black has a strong reputation as a specialist jury trial advocate and has appeared in the State Administrative Tribunal in complex matters involving proceedings brought by regulatory boards,” the Attorney-General added.

“The breadth of her experience will further strengthen the District Court bench.”
