Prior to Premier Daniel Andrews’ announcement that the time limit on Victoria’s current restrictions will be extended, the courts were largely managing matters online with only limited physical attendance permitted. In light of the new announcement, CJ Ferguson said she has asked fellow State Coroner Judge Cain to work through the next steps.
Mr Cain will work with criminal courts, the legal profession and stakeholders, while CJ Ferguson will consult civil courts and civil justice stakeholders. The focus will be on all necessary changes to common law, commercial, family violence and child protection.
“We have been extremely grateful for the co-operation and perseverance of everyone who has worked so hard with us to keep our virtual doors open,” said CJ Ferguson.
“We understand the importance of doing everything possible to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, while still delivering justice for the community.”
Each jurisdiction has significant procedural and practical changes and is ready to work with Victoria’s legal sector to develop a coordinated response to new developments.
“We thank all of our court users and staff for their patience and understanding,” said CJ Ferguson.
