Area: Finance, projects and development.

Key players: The legal team advising Sydney Metro was led by Ashurst partner Dan Brown, who was assisted by partner Krista Payne, senior associates Joshua Lee and Susannah Lace, and lawyer Ben Shilson-Josling.

Lawyers from the firm’s real estate, finance, dispute resolution and environment and planning teams also advised.

Deal significance: The development of the new station forms part of the Sydney Metro City and Southwest project, which is on track to open in 2024.

“Sitting 30 metres below ground, the strategically significant Barangaroo metro station will provide public transport access to local residential, commercial and entertainment areas and a new ferry hub,” a statement from Ashurst explained.

“The contract includes the station fit out, building a station entrance next to Nawi Cove and upgrading Hickson Road.

“The new station will include bike facilities, bus stops and taxi facilities. Tunnelling and excavation began at the Barangaroo station precinct in October 2019 and is now complete after two years of work to remove about 650,000 tonnes of dirt and rock.”

Commenting further, Ashurst partner Mr Brown said: “We are delighted to have acted for Sydney Metro on the $217 million contract with BESIX Watpac to build the Barangaroo metro station, an innovative project that will bring significant benefits to the community and form part of Australia’s largest public transport project.”
