Mr Atkin’s chief focus is insurance, and — the firm said — he is highly experienced in defending claims against professionals, with a particular focus on the construction and legal industries.

Managing partner Nick Crennan said the promotion was well deserved and part of the firm’s strategic focus on the continued growth of its professional indemnity practice.

“We have a history of strong and enduring leadership, client service and innovation. I have no doubt Phil will bring with him a fresh way of operating and provide a new generation of lawyers’ mentorship and support under his guidance,” Mr Crennan said.

“It is a pleasure and honour to have him join the ranks of partner.”

Co-head of insurance Cathryn Prowse commented: “Phil is a unicorn lawyer: not only is he technically first-rate but he is well liked and respected by peers, colleagues and clients alike.

“With professional indemnity claims and coverage core to our practice, his promotion furthers the depth of our leading national insurance practice.

“Phil’s focus and expertise aligns with two key areas that Colin Biggers & Paisley has a long-standing track record in, being construction risk and defending solicitors negligence claims. Phil’s appointment will contribute to the practice’s legacy in these areas which has been built over many decades.”

Elsewhere, Ms Jones has focused extensively on cyber crime and litigation. She completed her law exams in Hong Kong and was admitted to the Hong Kong High Court, where she joined Gall, a litigation boutique firm in Hong Kong.

Ms Jones rejoined Colin Biggers & Paisley in 2020 and brought a wealth of experience in international cyber crime and litigation with her.

Ms Jones stated that it was a good time to work in an area that is growing exponentially.

“It’s incredibly exciting to be able to play a leading part in driving this rapidly changing and expanding area of law forward for our practice,” she said.

“A cyber-attack is one of the biggest disruptors a business can face and being on hand to respond to cybersecurity incidents and safeguard for future attacks is incredibly challenging and rewarding.”

Mr Crennan commented: “Katherine is an incredibly talented and brilliant role model for young and aspiring legal professionals.

“Since her return to the practice, she’s been integral in positioning our disputes and investigations practice as a core part of our cross-practice capabilities, helping to deepen our industry-specific disputes expertise and encompasses, at a higher level, our experience in investigations, major disputes, class actions and international arbitrations.”

Mr Crennan said that both promotions are further examples of the firm’s commitment to bringing talented senior lawyers into the partnership who align strategically and culturally, and help the practice continue to meet the needs of its sophisticated client base.
