The Annual Winneke Cup this weekend promises to be a massive AFL event, according to organisers.

Blake Dawson Waldron, champions at last year’s Victorian legal football event, will face other eager contenders including firms Allens Arthur Robinson, Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Freehills and Minter Ellison.

As well, Corrs Chambers Westgarth will be taking part, having recruited some gun footballers as articled clerks in the off-season. And, according to football legal sources, Minters Ellison is looking “dangerous” competition.

Phillips Fox, Clayton Utz, Deacons and Lander & Rogers will also be taking part.

The competition is a round robin between the firms in both football and netball. Former AFL umpire and partner of Lander & Rogers, Derek Humphery-Smith and Craig Durham, will umpire the football Grand Final, which will be played later in the day.

Justice Winneke, president of the Victorian Supreme Court of Appeal and the Cup’s namesake, will present the trophies to the winning teams in both competitions.

A catered BBQ lunch will be provided, as will marquees that overlook each of the ovals in case of bad weather. The firms welcome anyone and encourage all lawyers to support them.

Go to: Royal Park, Parkville, on the Ransford and Western Ovals for football and the State Netball and Hockey Centre for netball 10.30 start.
