US giant Clifford Chance has teamed up with Indian firm AZB, strengthening the firm's presence in the rapidly expanding Indian market.

The firms have entered into a "best friends" relationship, in which Clifford Chance will refer work to be carried out in India to AZB, and AZB will refer international work to Clifford Chance to be carried out in its global network.
Clifford Chance seeks to benefit from AZB's Indian expertise and local presence, while AZB will be able to take advantage of Clifford Chance's international reach.
Clifford Chance senior partner Stuart Popham explained that the relationship has been formed as a result of India's present regulatory regime which poses challenges for both Indian and international clients seeking cross-border advice.
"[Clients] still have to look outside the country to access the requisite resources and expertise. This arrangement will allow our two firms to offer the best possible service within the current regulatory restrictions," he said.
The firms hope to form a closer association when Indian regulations permit.
