National mid-tier Hunt & Hunt is celebrating its 80th anniversary this month.

The firm was established as a conveyancing and insurance firm in 1929 by brothers Hector and Edward Hunt. With Australia on the brink of the Great Depression, it was possibly one of the worst times to be establishing a new business, but the inventive Hunt brothers at least gave the impression of viability by piling their desks with manila folders stuffed with copies of the Sydney Morning Herald, passing them off as legal files.

In the early years it was the insurance side of the business that held the ship afloat, but leading up to the Second World War the firm began to expand. By the 1960s the firm had grown to more than 100 staff and the partnership was opened up to those outside the Hunt family for the first time.

In 1973 the firm's first branch office was established in Eastwood, headed up by Ian Miller - who continues today as the office's managing partner.

The firm has continued to expand, and now has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Darwin, Newcastle and Shanghai across a diverse range of legal areas.

The sons of the two founding partners are still involved in aspects of the firm's practice.
