Launched today, the Legal Aid Matters web portal contains information about the funding crisis facing legal aid agencies and calls for visitors to the portal to join the LCA's funding campaign.

"The current state of legal aid funding leaves many vulnerable Australians without access to justice," said LCA president Glenn Ferguson.

"Most people don't think they will ever need legal assistance but if your circumstances change you may need to rely on it. Legal assistance helps ordinary people facing extraordinary problems in relation to debt, family law matters, welfare benefits, landlord and tenant problems, discrimination at work or community care needs."

Ferguson said the portal was designed to be used as a tool to educate the community about issues facing the legal assistance sector and also to garner support for improving access to justice for Australia's most vulnerable citizens.

"The Law Council and its constituent bodies have been calling on the Federal Government to address the underfunding of the legal assistance sector for well over a decade and unfortunately the current Government has done nothing to address the problem," said Ferguson.
