Carter Newell special counsel Brett Heath teamed up with composer, Clarry Evans, to create Brave New World Order: A serious rock comedy for Diana Gough Productions. The show runs through until 12 June.

According to Heath, the show combines a political cabaret with the plot of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Rock songs and even a cooking reality show are featured as the production puts its own unique slant on topical issues of the day.

"The show is just like an episode of the Simpsons in that it tackles major issues in a comedic way," Heath said.

The rock comedy show was first staged in 2002 and 2003, with Heath drawing much material from the war in Iraq and international arms dealing. He said the current production has been "re-jigged a little", to incorporate the global financial crisis and climate change.

"The theatre provides a convenient platform to promote discussion," said Heath. "The media presents many issues in a monochromatic way, and the theatre allows a different voice to be heard."

Heath has balanced his legal career with writing, acting and producing over the last 20 years, and runs a production company with his wife.

And while he said he enjoys the creative outlet such a balance provides him, he added that he has never considered ending his legal career to pursue a career in the arts full-time.

"It is too hard to make a living doing this [writing and producing] full-time, especially in Brisbane," he said. "I also still enjoy the legal work I do and am happy and able to combine the two."
