A special counsel from DibbsBarker has launched a unique book aimed at fostering stronger relationships between Germany and Australia.

Dr Wolfgang Babeck, the European counsel at DibbsBarker and adjunct professor at Bond University, launched Introduction to Australian Law (or Einführung in das australische Recht) at an event in Sydney on Monday evening (28 November).

The book examines Australian law from a civil law perspective, and includes forewords by former Chief Justice of the High Court Michael Kirby and Governor-General Quentin Bryce.

It is one of the first comprehensive books about Australian law to be published in a foreign language (German).

The book includes a comparative analysis of contract law, torts, family law and succession, with a comprehensive chapter relating to business law, commercial and corporations law, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property and employment law. It also contains a summary of the law in New Zealand.

In his foreword to the book, Kirby describes it as an "exceptional work ... both timely and potentially influential".

Dr Christoph Müller, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Dr Geraldine Mackenzie, the Dean of the Law Faculty, Bond University, spoke at the event.

As well as being European counsel in the firm's mergers & acquisitions services group, Babeck is the coordinator of the DibbsBarker European desk. He is admitted in three jurisdictions - New South Wales, England and Wales, and Germany.
