IT’S A “feather in our cap” to be the first law firm in Australia to earn the legal profession’s new quality assurance certification, according to partner Craig Osborne of Wollongong firm Russell McLelland Brown (RMB).

Speaking at the launch of LAW 9000, held on the 19th floor of Minter Ellison’s offices in Sydney last week, Osborne told an audience including NSW Attorney-General Bob Debus and Law Society president Gordon Salier that the firm was proud to be the first to accept the accolade.

“LAW 9000 will set new standards in quality of service and accountability in the legal profession,” Osborne said.

Developed by SAI Global (Standards Australia) and QL Incorporated, with the NSW Law Society and the College of Law, LAW 9000 is an auditing mechanism intended to help legal practices deliver reliable, efficient and consistent results for clients through improved management systems.

The ‘five ticks’ logo — which can be used by law firms compliant with LAW 9000 — is recognised around the world, Osborne said. This would encourage other firms to aim for certification.

“At the launch, other firms asked me how we went about it. There was broad interest from the suburbs, city and regional areas.”

The firm had to pass a rigorous examination of the way it conducted its business and looked after its clients, Osborne said. “Every six months you are examined again, so you have to continuously get it right. Every six months you are audited.”
