Anthony Albanese opened his victory speech, at the end of the 2022 federal election, by promising a referendum to implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart during his first term in Parliament. The Uluru Statement from the Heart aims to give First Nations People the right to a constitutional voice concerning laws and matters that affect the Indigenous population.

As noted by The Guardian on 14 May 2022, Anthony Albanese said during a Darwin press conference: “This is a generous offer from First Nations people. First Nations people are just asking to be consulted on issues that affect their lives, on health, on education, on housing, on those issues.”

The Balnaves chair in constitutional law and the co-chair of the Uluru Dialogue, Professor Megan Davis, said that “it’s been a big five years”.

“We’ve done a lot of work to get to where we are today and it is in no small way due to the support of the Indigenous Law Centre and commitment from all involved.

“We can see the stars aligning and it is fitting we are marking this occasion with a significant milestone in this movement. The night will have a great sense of optimism and hope to see the Uluru Statement from the Heart come into fruition,” Professor Davis said.

The exhibition included the Piti, Tjutinypa, and Tjara, which were gifted on behalf of the Mutitjulu community to the contributors of the RC Regional Dialogues and the Uluru Convention by Pitjantjatjara elder Sammy Wilson, traditional owner of Uluru. The intent behind these gifts was to “defend the Uluru Statement and to keep the message straight”.

Also featured in the exhibition was a framed photo of the lawyers who assisted in the creation of the Uluru Statement and to celebrate the role of the Indigenous Law Centre as well as the original Uluru Statement from the Heart.
