Aussie lawyers score partnership posts in China
Two lawyers who obtained their legal qualifications in Australia have joined the partnership of an international firm in China.

MinterEllison has recruited Bi Chen and Chris Carr as new partners for its Beijing and Shanghai offices respectively.

Ms Chen joins MinterEllison from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Fangda Parnters. Although commencing her role in Minters’ Hong Kong and Sydney offices, the foreign investment and M&A lawyer will ultimately be based in Beijing.
Ms Chen has acted for a number of Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and has particular experience in Chinese overseas direct investment into other countries. She recently returned from a posting in Moscow, where she advised Chinese investors on the Russian market.
Commenting on her appointment, she noted her new firm’s track record with the Chinese market.
“I am attracted to the depth of MinterEllison's China practice and look forward to supporting our clients investing in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond,” she said.
Mr Carr joins the firm from King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney. He has also previously worked for Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Beijing.
Over the course of his career, Mr Carr has worked with multinational and Chinese clients, focusing on investment strategies and cross-border transactions.
“I am excited about the opportunity to return to China in the coming months. I am looking forward to joining one of the leading China FDI practices in Australia and the region,” Mr Carr said.
According to a statement released by Minters, Mr Carr has a diploma in Chinese language from the prestigious Peking University, and also holds a bachelor of laws (honours) and a bachelor of arts (Chinese) from the University of Melbourne.
Ms Chen obtained her law degree from the University of Sydney and holders a masters in commerce from the University of NSW.
Adam Handley, MinterEllison’s China markets leader, underscored the calibre and experience of the new partners.
“Both Bi and Chris are outstanding lawyers, with a proven track record acting for Chinese SOEs and private-owned enterprises investing overseas, and also for foreign corporates investing into China,” Mr Handley said.
“Their appointments are in line with our strategic vision for our China practice and ensure that we continue to have Australian-qualified, Chinese-speaking lawyers on the ground in mainland China to further enhance our capability in Beijing and Shanghai.”
