A leading energy and natural resources partner at Allens Arthur Robinson has left the firm to join Jones Day.

Tony Wassaf, who joined the Sydney office of the global firm late last month, has more than 25 years’ experience in the sector.

Jones Day has celebrated the hire, with partner in charge, Chris Ahern saying the timing is perfect as multi-billion dollar energy and natural resources projects fuel Australia’s economic growth.

“We are very fortunate to have [Wassaf] join us at this stage, as clients nationally and overseas continue to seek expert legal advice and support ahead of major resources and energy acquisitions and expansions.”

“[He] has built an international reputation for his commercial focus, his ability to quickly identify issues and find solutions, and his strength in contract drafting,” Ahern said.

Wassaf is rated as one of the world’s best energy and natural resource lawyers by Chambers Global.

Wassaf himself said: “This is an exciting time to be working in the energy and natural resources area, especially given the increasingly global nature of the sector and global interest in Australian assets. I am looking forward to being part of a team whose global footprint will provide current and prospective clients with the best international expertise and resources.”

Jones Day’s new recruit has been a director of AMPLA Limited, the Resources and Energy Law Association for the last 10 years and is its immediate past president. He is also a member of the section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law of the International Bar Association and an officer of the Council of that section.
