New silks make the cut on Victorian Bar

Michael Colbran QC, chairman of the Victorian Bar, applauded the choice, and particularly that three of the new appointments were women. The new women include Maryanne Hartley, Kirsty Marion Macmillan and Rachel Marie Doyle. “We’re very pleased at the diversity in the new appointments, both in terms of the areas of practice of the new silks and the fact that 3 of the 13 are women,” he said. Colbran said the appointments were made with “great thoroughness and care”. He said the appointment process for senior counsel included “a great deal of consideration”. The Chief Justice has been considering applications for silk since August this year. “The Bar thanks the Chief Justice, and the judges of the Supreme Court who assist her, for the time, care and thoroughness given to considering the applications and making the selection,” Colbran said. The chairman of the Bar Council can now give feedback to unsuccessful applications. The chairman consults with the Chief Justice in accordance with the protocol for appointment of Silk established by the court.
