A new charitable foundation, launched yesterday by the state's legal body and spearheaded by Allan Myers AO QC, will raise money to support legal education and training of lawyers, and provide direct support, through grants, to lawyers and students who need assistance. 

The Victorian Bar Foundation will raise money to support legal education and training of lawyers, and community projects which promote awareness of the legal system and the role of the law, the the Victorian Bar has announced.

“The Foundation provides a way for the Victorian Bar to be involved in educational projects which assist people to study law or to train as lawyers,” said Victorian Bar chairman Mark Moshinsky SC, who is also a member of the board of directors of the new Foundation.

“It means that we can provide direct support, through grants, to lawyers and law students who need assistance in furthering their education and training,” he said.

“The Foundation will provide a way for the Victorian Bar to work with the different areas of profession and invest in the future by creating opportunities for those who need it.”

The Foundation will act as a trustee of charitable trusts, the Victorian Bar said in a statement today. 

The Foundation seeks donations, administers funds and evaluates and makes grants.

Grant recipients will include law students, lawyers continuing their legal education and organisations promoting training to lawyers and legal institutions in Australia and overseas.

The Foundation will be funded through donations from members of the Victorian Bar and the judiciary.

Joining Allan Myers AO QC, who is chairman, is the Honourable Justice Susan Crennan AC, the Honourable Justice John Middleton, William Alstergren, Paul Anastassiou SC, Michael Colbran QC, John Digby QC, Ross Gillies QC, John Karkar QC, Kate McMillan SC, Mark Moshinsky SC, Norman O’Bryan AM SC, Alexandra Richards QC and Neil Young QC, and will include Ross Macaw QC.
