The Laing O'Rourke in-house legal team won the battle for the Dolman In-House Lawyer or Team of the Year Award at the 2011 Lawyers Weekly Awards, sponsored by Bentley Motors, at a gala ceremony held at the Sydney Opera House last night.

The award was hotly contested between the eventual winners and last year's winners - the Kraft Foods legal team (previously known as Cadbury).

The Laing O'Rourke in-house team impressed the judges with their successful defence of two significant matters in which the company was involved, which were resolved in the Western Australia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

The judges were also impressed with the team's reaction to the Queensland floods earlier this year, which affected a number of the company's projects and destroyed one of their primary operating premises in Brisbane's southern suburbs.

The 2010 in-house team of the year, Cadbury, made an appearance at this year's awards under their new brand, Kraft Foods. The team was highly commended for their efforts in transferring the businesses across Australia and New Zealand.

Other finalists included AMP legal team, Future Fund legal department, Perpetual legal services and Telstra in-house legal team.

The team from Laing O'Rourke celebrate their win for In-House Legal Team of the Year with fellow award winner, Colin Biggers & Paisley's Luke Solly, third from left, at the 2011 Lawyers Awards held at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday night.
