Former DLA head takes chief position at WA firm

Former DLA head takes chief position at WA firm

Western Australia law firm Jackson McDonald announced the appointment of its new chief executive officer today (8 July).

The firm's inaugural CEO John McLean will hand over the reins to Malcolm Shelton-Agar this month, the firm’s chairman of partners Richard Sandover said.

Shelton-Agar comes to Jackson McDonald from Singapore law firm Allen & Gledhill, where he was COO. Prior to this he spent more than a decade as managing partner and then managing director of DLA Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper).

On his appointment, Shelton-Agar said: "The firm is highly regarded in Australia; I am excited about where Jackson McDonald is positioned. I feel my experience in independent and global firms and expertise gained in a variety of senior management roles will enable me to make a significant contribution to the firm.

“I particularly look forward to hearing from our clients about the challenges they face and their expectations of us in this rapidly-changing environment.”

Jackson McDonald, which has been established for 90 years, is WA’s largest independent law firm.

McLean, who was CEO at Jackson McDonald for 14 years, said, “Our decision to remain independent and WA focused has allowed our energies to be directed at developing our people, expanding in particular sectors and focusing on the expectations of our clients.

"I have seen significant change, not just at the firm, but within the whole profession. More than 16 firms entered WA in the past three years. Under this intense competition we have thrived," McLean added.

Sandover said: "We are fortunate to have had John’s guidance over the past 14 years. He has brought rigour to our strategic planning processes and passion to its implementation.

“The firm is well placed to continue to leverage off growth opportunities in this state and in the region and Malcolm’s extensive legal management experience, both national and regional, is perfectly suited to the role.”

“John leaves a strong platform for Malcolm to build on," Sandover added.
