THE LAW Council of Australia has appointed Bill Grant AM as the council’s new secretary-general.

Grant joins the council with extensive government experience, having previously been the CEO of the NSW Legal Aid Commission, and in the past, the deputy director of the NSW Attorney-General’s Department and a senior officer in the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office.

According to the Law Council of Australia’s president, Ross Ray QC, Grant is experienced in intergovernmental relations and has expertise in policy, administration and management, particularly in the legal aid field. Announcing the appointment last week, Ray said “we are very pleased to secure Bill’s services. We are looking forward to his leadership in our CEO role”.

Grant will take up the position early next year, replacing Peter Webb who is retiring from the position after three-and-a-half years. “I am looking forward to working with the director’s of the Law Council and its constituent members on important national issues confronting the legal profession,” he said.
